Psoriasis and vitiligo

Psoriasis is genetically programmed inflammatory  disease that primarily affects the skin in about 3 to 8 % of population.

 It is characterized by skin cells that multiply up to 10 times faster than normal. When  these  cells reach the surface and die, raised ,red plaques  form that are covered with white scales .These plaques tend to  occur in scalp, elbows and knees.

Since psoriasis mainly affects the skin, topical treatments are very useful and are relatively safe. For more extreme psoriasis, a useful option is UV light exposure. At this time, the most popular type of uv light for psoriasis is called narrow band UVB. Phototherapy can be used alone or with medications when treating psoriasis.

Ther are a variety of drugs administred systematically that are useful in controlling psoriasis, most act by targeting  portions of the immune system. one exception is a drug called acitretin which is naturally similar to vitamin A

Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a condition in which the skin loses its pigment cells (melanocytes)

It is a disease that causes loss of skin color in patches

Vitiligo  usually begins with a few small white patches that may gradually spread over the body over the course of several months.

Topical vitamin D analogs, caluirine inhibitors are used NBUVB therapy, Eximir lasers, PUVA therapy

NBUVB

Narrow band UVB(NB-UVB) is a particular treatment where a small part of the UVB light spectrum is used to treat the skin condition treatment lamps produce these special rays which has anti inflammatory effects on the skin.

Treatment can range from three months to travels months one year to minimize annual UVB dose.

Each phototherapy sessions last about 1-15 min a minimum of 24 hr is required between each session.
